Mātauranga

We hold wānanga to support and upskill our whānau, kaitiaki and teachers. We also work closely with schools and kura to provide ākonga with hands on experiences in the wetlands and estuaries within the rohe.

Some examples of our mahi include:

  • Taking small groups of students through the wetlands to show them the wetland plants and share information with them about the traditional uses of the plants, including ti kouka, kahikatea, harakeke and rimu.
  • Kōrero with students in the forest about the traditional uses of the kahikatea tree. Talking about using kahikatea spears for hunting kereru in the kahikatea trees, the rongoa uses of the plant and other things that were made from the bark and dried leaves.
